The purpose of diabetes related tests is to detect pre-diabetes and undiagnosed diabetes, as well as to monitor how well the diabetes is controlled.

Diabetes occurs when the body’s ability to regulate the amount of blood sugar (glucose) is impaired.

In type 1 diabetes the body is no longer able to produce insulin, and in the more common type 2 (which occurs more frequently with age) the body is no longer sensitive to its action. Lifestyle changes can prevent pre-diabetes from progressing to type 2 diabetes, as well as being effective in treatment.

Health markers

Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients that are required by the body to work properly and stay healthy. There are 13 main types of vitamins – such as Vitamin D, and a number of minerals such as iron. Ensuring an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals is crucial for the regulation of many bodily functions, such as the formation of blood cells, tissues, genetic material and hormones.

Health markers

There are 3 main types of cells in the blood – platelets (important for stopping bleeding), white cells (to fight infection) and red cells (carries oxygen around the body). A full blood count provides information about these cells. For example, if someone is feeling tired frequently, the blood status can determine whether anaemia (low red cells) is a cause for this.

Health markers

The thyroid is a gland located in the neck that produces hormones that regulate the metabolism, and how we use and store energy. The thyroid profile is used to evaluate thyroid function to diagnose and control hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Health markers

Reproductive hormones play important roles in female fertility. Imbalance in these hormones, for instance, caused by PCOS, can result in irregular menstrual cycles and problems with ovulation, which in turn affects fertility.

Every woman is born with a specific number of eggs in her ovaries, but with age, the number of eggs (also called the ovarian reserve), decreases. The ability of the ovaries to produce the female hormone oestradiol also decreases and the level of the stimulatory hormone FSH increases.

The thyroid affects practically all cells in the body, and has a key role in metabolism, growth, body temperature, sleep and fertility. When the thyroid is not functioning correctly, symptoms can be vague and a blood test can be an easy way of identifying a problem. This test includes results for 3 thyroid hormones and a personal medical report. Click on the 'Thyroid' tab for a breakdown of the markers included. You can also click on each marker to learn more. Please note that this test should only be taken on weekdays (Monday - Friday).

The thyroid is a gland located in the neck that produces hormones regulating our metabolism (how we use and store energy), as well as other bodily functions. Symptoms of weight gain, fatigue, depression and feeling cold, can all be due to an underactive thyroid - the most common thyroid disorder.

A thyroid profile is used to evaluate thyroid function to diagnose and control hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. This test measures your levels of the three thyroid hormones Triiodothyronine (T3), Thyroxine (T4) and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH).

The anti-TPO antibody test is used for detection of autoimmune thyroid disease such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Grave’s disease. Checking for anti-TPO helps differentiate autoimmune thyroid disorders from non-autoimmune ones.

Anti-TPO is a type of autoantibody. Autoantibodies are produced by the immune system, but instead of outside invaders such as viruses and bacteria, autoantibodies attack the body itself. In this instance anti-TPO attacks thyroid peroxidase (TPO) - an enzyme found in the thyroid gland, needed for the production of thyroid hormones. Attacks on the TPO enzyme block its activity, which in turn affects the production of thyroid hormones.

Menopause affects your health

This test measures key hormonal levels and health areas affected by menopause, such as bone health and cardiovascular risk. We also check your thyroid hormone levels, as thyroid dysfunction can cause menopause-like symptoms.

Do I need to fast?

You must not eat or drink anything other than water for at least 10 hours before the test. Taken at day 3 of the menstrual cycle if you are having periods or random day if you do not have periods. Hormonal contraceptives and HRT can affect results. Avoid high dose biotin.

Perimenopause is the time when you are transitioning towards menopause, and the hormonal balance starts changing. This can result in menopausal symptoms but can also affect health in other ways, such as the increased risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Perimenopause typically starts in your 40s but can happen earlier or later. Your results will be delivered together with a personal comment from one of our doctors. Click on any of the health areas for a breakdown of the markers included. You can also click on each marker to learn more. Please note that this test should be taken while fasted, and only on weekdays (Monday - Friday). You should also know that hormonal contraceptives and HRT can alter the results.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the world, but it can be prevented. Dyslipidemia (excess of triglycerides and cholesterol in blood) is one of the most important risk factors, however, lipid levels are strongly affected by diet and exercise.

After menopause women's cholesterol levels have a tendency to worsen, and the risk of cardiovascular problems increases. Tracking your levels over time and acting early if your lipids worsen, can help reduce the risk.
